According to Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, it is important for the Government that the establishment of new circumstances takes place under the coordination of the Estonian Safety Investigation Bureau, independently, and in cooperation of the safety investigation bureaus of Estonia, Finland and Sweden. “The Government provides the Estonian Safety Investigation Bureau with certainty to continue with the preparation of underwater explorations. We wish for them to be finished with preparations by the time the Finnish and Swedish legislation allow to commence underwater exploration,” said the Prime Minister.
According to Kaja Kallas, with today’s decision, the Cabinet confirmed that the additional investigation of new circumstances concerning the sinking of cruiseferry M/S Estonia must be conducted in a manner that is reliable, transparent, and inclusive of representative organisations of loved ones.
The Government tasked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government Office with continuing consultations with the Swedish and Finnish authorities to find the legal framework suitable for underwater explorations.
