3D laser scanning survey of the wreck of MV Estonia started today

23.05.2022 | 16:53

The aim of the 3D laser scanning survey is to create a point cloud of the wreck of MV Estonia and the landforms in the immediate vicinity of the wreck, which will later be used to create a 3D model of the ship. In addition to the wreck and its surrounding landforms, high-tech equipment is used to survey the interior of the car deck.

The 3D laser scanning of MV Estonia will be carried out on VOS Sweet, a research vessel operating under the Dutch flag. The research ship left the port of Gdynia in Poland on Saturday, May 21, and arrived at the location of the MV Estonia wreck on Monday morning. The marine surveys are carried out 24/7.

To conduct the 3D laser scanning surveys of the wreck of MV Estonia, the ESIB organised a public procurement, which was won by ESC Risk Management OÜ as the main contractor. 3D laser scanning services are provided by Kraken Robotics. The survey team is an international one, it includes experts from Estonia, Sweden, Germany, and Poland. The surveys will last 4-5 days, depending on the weather conditions and underwater visibility.
